N4OME

On May 7, 2003 a line of thunderstorms moved into Georgia from Alabama and marched right across South Fulton County, North Cowetta County, and Fayette County. There were many reports of damage, particularly in Cowetta County.

Darryl, N4OME, experienced the brunt of the storm when the high winds caused two large pine trees to fall in his back yard. One of those big pines came down across the guy wires for his tower and caused it to buckle and fall. The pictures below give you a glimpse of the major task that cleaning up and securing the safety of things can be.

1 - The large pine tree you see on the ground is the one that snagged the guy wires and cause the tower failure. Note the vertical length of tower that's hanging from the pine tree standing in the foreground and then the horizontal piece extending to the right.
2 - The horizontal piece of tower goes all the way over to the house where there is another buckle in the tower .
3 - Another view of the hanging sections. The entire vertical piece is hanging by one guy wire caught over a limb of the large pine tree on the right.
4 - As you can see here, the base also buckled right at the concrete. This base is totally unusable and will have to be replaced.
5 - The sections nearest the ground broke the deck railing then landed on the house.
6 - It is amazing how the tower buckled the way it did.

Two more views of the hanging sections.

9 - The anchor and pole raising the guys in the front yard were completely pulled out of the ground.
10 - The anchor was here.
11 - The pole was here.
12 - The anchor and the end of the pole.

Two views of the pole.

15 - The pole and anchor were standing/hanging against the side of the house.

On July 2, 2003, Darryl - N4OME got together with Tony - W4ZT, John - N4JML and John's son Michael to get the new tower standing tall.
